Targeting VoIP, Advocacy Group Launches in South Carolina

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Citizens for a Digital Futurereportedly has launched its services in South Carolina to promote adoption of and access to broadband and other digital technologies.

The group demands public policies by the governments that make the adoption of broadband easier and consumer-friendly – important policies for regional development.

According to Citizens for a Digital Future, broadband technology can bring a host of features and benefits to the customers. Broadband makes distant education a powerful reality as students can take virtual classes. Many institutes have already started their online classes and students can take the benefit from anywhere in the world.

Broadband is making an impact in the healthcare sector, too. Telemedicine and e-health services have reduced the cost of healthcare and made healthcare available to patients in even the remote corners. Broadband has also created many jobs and made the concept of remote working a reality.

“Citizens for a Digital Future recognizes that many states are still operating under outdated and burdensome telecommunications regulations,” said John Watson, Chairman of Citizens for a Digital Future. “South Carolinians now have the benefit of VoIP, wireless, broadband and other technologies in addition to traditional wireline phones. We believe that laws that affect these services should be updated to keep the industry moving forward for consumers.”

Broadband empowers economic development in a region, claims Citizens for a Digital Future. Many small companies all over the world have used the power of broadband to enhance their businesses. As an online marketplace does not require lots of investment, it is affordable even to the smallest player in the economy.

Recently, the organization launched its services in Alabama. The organization plans to support consumer friendly public policies, especially those encouraging broadband deployment in areas that are still woefully without access. The organization believes that broadband is a critical tool when it comes to economically empowering and sustaining African American communities.
