To provide first-to-market 40G bandwidth service for carriers and large enterprises in the region, Lightower Fiber Networks has selected technology from Nortel. Lightower provides metro fiber network and bandwidth services in the northeast United States.
The Nortel (News - Alert) solution allows the 10G network of a company to provide four times the capacity today – and 10 times the capacity in the near future, claims Nortel. The digital signal processing techniques of the solution make 40Gbps and 100Gbps transmission over existing infrastructures possible. Also, there is no need for complex network re-engineering add-on equipment required by alternative solutions, according to Nortel.
Lightower has 400,000 miles of fiber in a network that spans the New England, New York Metro, Long Island and Hudson Valley markets. The company has upgraded its core network backbone to 40G and is all set to provide connectivity services from 1G to 40G. Lightower will begin testing Nortel 100G services on its network to get ready for the future growth.
“For bandwidth providers like Lightower, network performance and reliability must also be paired with the ability to quickly turn up new services,” said Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. “The unique combination of ROADM (News - Alert)(2) and dispersion compensation technology in our OME 6500 platform creates a simple network design that allows Lightower to quickly respond to their customers’ requests for new connectivity services.”
Lightower will make use of Nortel’s Optical Multiservice Edge (OME) 6500 solution along with its 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine technology to power its 40G network. these technologies together offer a 40G solution that can overcome hurdles associated with many DWDM deployments.
Nortel recently expanded its software based unified communications platform to be used by companies beyond the small and medium businesses (SMB). Nortel’s Software Communications System (SCS (News - Alert)) Release 3.0 brings solution simplicity, new applications, further plug-and-play interoperability and more opportunities for third-party development communities. The new release of the SCS solution now caters to enterprises beyond small and medium-size businesses, says Nortel
