I always enjoy writing about cool new apps. Especially cool new apps that help you expand the intrinsic capabilities of popular 'it' gadgets like the iPad.
VNC offers such a product - the VNC Viewer app. Originally available for the iPhone (News - Alert) and the iPod touch, it has recently started allowing remote access for the iPad. That gives it universal appeal and unprecedented flexibility - and it has paid off. The VNC Viewer is one of the highest rated applications of its kind on the App Store.
So what does the VNC Viewer do? In short, it provides remote access and control of Mac OS X, Windows, Linux or UNIX computers from devices such as an iPad.
It enables personal users to provide remote support to friends and family members, access home computers whilst travelling and view Flash-based websites.
According to the VNC website, the Viewer has also been recognized as a practical business application for organizations that have adopted iPhones and iPads as support implements. IT staffers have been able to remotely support colleagues during the day, as well as providing 24/7 access to remote desktops or servers for all of their duties, saving them innumerous trips to the office.
It features an innovative scrolling key bar containing buttons representative of useful computer keyboard keys, such as function, modifier, editing, and navigation keys. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users will also benefit from the new connection recognition features, which allow them to give user-friendly names and desktop previews to help identify computers. Automatic discovery of computers in the local area is provided using Apple's (News - Alert) Bonjour system.
Dr. Andy Harter, CEO at RealVNC, said, 'VNC Viewer is proving to be an essential tool on the iPad and iPhone. Business and home users alike are finding the application gives them the freedom to connect to all of their computers from a single device, wherever they are located.' He added, 'We thought VNC Viewer would be popular on these devices, but have been surprised by the huge number of users and the incredibly positive feedback left in the App Store. We have some exciting plans for future versions.'
