Panduit Answers the Need for Speed

By Erin Harrison, Executive Editor, Strategic Initiatives

As the need for consolidation, virtualization and convergence grow more pervasive, enterprise demand for high speed data centers and streamlined infrastructures is ever-present.

Industry leader Panduit drives an organic view of physical business infrastructures, through its Unified Physical Infrastructure (UPI) vision. The Tinley Park, Ill.-based company provides a comprehensive line of next-generation high speed data transport solutions – a system of physical infrastructure products that are integrated and scalable – to address the ever-increasing bandwidth requirements of advanced data center network applications.

“Today’s data center is becoming more complex; enterprises have many reasons for cost reduction so facilities are being consolidated to create more dense data center footprints,” according to K.G. Anand, director of global product marketing at Panduit. “Where they had maybe 10 data centers before, they are now downsizing it to three or four [centers].

The second thing that’s driving this need is virtualization. What people are trying to do is actually get more out of their assets and resources and lower their costs of operation. To help do this we obviously have to have very high speeds in the data center. The number of users doesn’t change, so in order to serve the same number of applications, the speed levels must increase to keep the service levels up.”
Panduit offers a full line of innovative high speed data transport products that meet the most demanding industry requirements for data and telecommunication applications. Systems are designed to support emerging technologies, including Voice over IP and Gigabit Ethernet. Panduit’s suite of HSDT solutions includes: 10Gig Copper, 10 Gig Fiber, 40 100Gig, Infiniband, OM4 and SFP+.

While other providers may overlook the key business issues surrounding the operations of a data center, Panduit’s methodology is unique in that they provide end-to-end solutions through a consultative approach that offers design flexibility.

“We are in the process of developing reference designs unique to each customer, optimized for what the customer wants,” said Anand. “Panduit has strong partnerships with leading vendors such as IBM, Cisco (News - Alert) and HP that allows us to customize a solution with the technology or media that best serves their needs.”

The Panduit High Speed Data Transport Solution allows flexibility during planning, designing, commissioning and operation of the data center infrastructure that is both protocol and media agnostic.

“We have all the latest and greatest technologies for connectivity and cable, but this is not a one shot thing. Panduit leads the industry and is setting the standard as we’ve done with the OM4 and 10Gig.”

The industry is currently working on the 40Gig standard.

To meet the need for faster processing speeds, lower power server interconnect, I/O consolidation deployments, and deliver an integrated approach to connectivity, Panduit recently rolled out its 10Gig SFP+ Direct Attach Passive Copper Cable Assemblies in its new headquarters facility.

“As many leading-edge data centers move to a hybrid copper/fiber topology when deploying 10 gigabit applications, the Panduit SFP+ 10Gig Cable Assemblies are a perfect choice to connect servers to top of rack access switches,” according to Steve Skiest, Panduit product development manager. “This integrated high-speed data transport system benefits latency sensitive enterprises such as financial services where a millisecond delay may affect business transactions.”

To help enterprises align, converge and optimize their five critical systems – communications, computing, control, power and security – Panduit’s UPI-based data center solutions feature high-speed data transport capabilities to connect server, storage, and network systems with unparalleled performance, reliability and scalability to minimize risks associated with convergence and consolidation.

“In the data center you will find at least three of the systems, so the HSDT offering is targeted specifically at the data center and this is a key application driving the UPI framework,” Anand said. “The way we approach this is one of the things we can do within the data center to help it become more efficient. Panduit UPI solutions address everything that fits into the UPI framework, from services to software and appliances to high transmission cable, to integrated cabinets and sensors, we offer the complete portfolio.”
