Turkcell Selects Voltaire InfiniBand

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Turkcell (Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri A.S.), an Istanbul-based mobile telecommunications and technology company, has selected Voltaire’s InfiniBand-based I/O fabric.

Turkcell (News - Alert), a telecommunications and technology provider in Turkey and the second largest GSM operator in Europe in terms of subscriber numbers, used Voltaire 20 Gb/s InfiniBand switches to successfully consolidate more than 18 Oracle (News - Alert) Database 11g instances onto a single Oracle Real Application Cluster enabling more efficient delivery of value-added services to customers and lowering computing costs.

Officials with Voltaire said that Turkcell deployed Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Applications Clusters on a six-node Linux cluster consisting of HP ProLiant DL580 servers interconnected with the company’s 20 Gb/s InfiniBand switches.

The company officials said that using the solution, Turkcell created a more streamlined system for launching new services and lowered their computing costs by using fewer servers and less power.

“We selected Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Applications Clusters with Voltaire InfiniBand with the intent to consolidate many of our service databases and use just one platform to launch new value-added services to our customers,” said Hüsnü Sensoy, Turkcell database architect, in a statement.

Sensoy said that the company not only saved money by reducing the number of servers in the data center, but the company now has a much more utilized, highly available and flexible system that will allow it to scale to meet future requirements.

He said that using Voltaire InfiniBand for the solution’s I/O fabric is a key factor in the improved scalability and cost reduction enabled by moving to an Oracle Real Application Cluster environment.

Sensoy said that Voltaire InfiniBand also supplied the high bandwidth and low latency the company needed to make applications migration run smoothly.

“Voltaire InfiniBand with HP servers running Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Applications Clusters enable Turkcell to transparently deploy a single database across a cluster of servers providing high availability and scalability, while lowering computing costs,” said Asaf Somekh, vice president of marketing, Voltaire.

Somekh said that the company is pleased to deliver Turkcell a future-proof, high-performing, resilient system that helps them deliver highly profitable value-added services to their customers throughout Europe.

Voltaire is a provider of scale-out computing fabrics for data centers, high performance computing and cloud environments.
