Zoho Eases Access for Google, Yahoo Users

To ease access, a widely praised Internet start-up company has set up a way for Google (News - Alert) and Yahoo! users to try its applications without creating a new account, the company announced today.

The so-called “unified login system” is a new feature for Zoho, an AdventNet (News - Alert) Inc. subsidiary that offers a range of free, Internet-based applications designed to help individuals and businesses manage their work.

Zoho executive Raju Vegesna said the company’s polls showed that users preferred Zoho applications but that people were wary of creating new accounts.

“For Google and Yahoo! users who are curious about Zoho but don’t want to set up another account, we’ve removed that hurdle,” Vegesna said. “Users don’t have to create a Zoho account to use Zoho applications. We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to try our online apps.”

Those applications are designed to assist students, educators, nonprofit organizations and small and medium-sized businesses, according to Zoho officials. The company’s applications cover word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, note-taking, decision-making, e-mailing, recruitment, databases, Web conferencing, invoicing, CRM solutions and project management.

The company sometimes charges a fee to large organizations using its programs, Zoho officials say.

In creating a smooth way for Google and Yahoo! users to use its products, Zoho officials are targeting an enormous group of Internet users, as the two giants represent the largest search engines in the industry.

Specifically, users will see a “Sign in using Google or Yahoo! account” display on Zoho’s homepage. Users can then click on a link to “Google” or “Yahoo!” to reach that company’s login page, and submit their username and password. After granting permission for Zoho to access the Google or Yahoo! account information, the user is directed to Zoho.

Alternatively, Zoho officials say, a user can map his or her Google or Yahoo! account with an existing Zoho account, or use the traditional method of creating a new Zoho account by choosing a unique username

Zoho officials say the new feature will help users take advantage of their applications. In particular, the new functionality will help people share documents with friends who have Google or Yahoo! accounts, according to the company.

To date, Zoho has launched 16 applications, company officials say. It also won a 2008 PC WORLD 25 Most Innovative Products Award for Zoho Notebook and “Best Enterprise Start-up” at The 2007 Crunchies.
