MetaSwitch Continues to Grow Its Softswitch Business

By Richard Grigonis
Executive Editor, IP Communications Group

Yours Truly first became fully aware of MetaSwitch (News - Alert) (www.metaswitch.com) and their equipment for the service provider VoIP market about seven years ago, when I came across their extremely successful MetaSwitch VP3500 Next Generation Class 5 Switch. I saw this innovative softswitch being demonstrated, powering SIP services (for enhanced applications) along with an interesting subscriber Web Self-care interface. At the time, Metaswitch was new to the North American market, but had already begun a big marketing push, focusing their sales efforts not so much on major carriers, but mostly rural independent and other smaller service providers.

Today, MetaSwitch continues to strengthen its position in delivering reliable, high-quality voice communications platforms and services. They recently posted some significant deployment and corporate milestones. For example, their total shipments of Class 5 switching capacity has now passed the 20 million subscriber mark. Moreover, 25 million unified messaging licenses, part of the MetaSphere application suite, have now been shipped. More than 400 carriers have now deployed MetaSwitch’s solutions and services to serve its customers. MetaSwitch’s continuing success — both in terms of technological advancements and company growth — can be measured in the size of its workforce which is now more than 500 employees worldwide.

“MetaSwitch continues to grow steadily, because our core values of quality technology, innovation, reliability and support are shared by our customers,” says Ian Ferguson, MetaSwitch Chairman. “As carriers closely examine their expenditure, they are aggressively seeking financially stable partners that can deliver an immediate impact on their bottom line, with the deployment of new, quick-to-revenue applications and services. MetaSwitch remains committed to growing our internal resources so we can continue to help our customers to address their business challenges.”

During 2008 alone, MetaSwitch introduced various new applications and services, including enhancements to its MetaSphere application suite, as well as its MetaView Network Management System. Additionally, revenue from carrier VoIP solutions has grown by more than 50 percent annually over the last five years, with consistent profitability and operating margins in excess of 20 percent. As a result, MetaSwitch is now the preeminent vendor of switching and applications solutions in North America, with a growing worldwide presence.

“Despite a failing economy, we predict continued growth in the VoIP infrastructure market over the next five years,” said Deborah Kish, Principal Research Analyst for Carrier Network Infrastructure, Gartner (News - Alert), Inc. “And, with many incumbent vendors facing significant challenges, newer players with greater customer focus and growth potential are likely to increase market share.”
