Hitachi Europe and Green Data Systems Build Green Data Center in Europe

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

Green Data Systems, a provider of optimal Green Data Availability Solution is one of the key players in the ECO2DC initiative. And when it comes to data center energy efficiency, Hitachi's (News - Alert) modular type data centers are thought to be one of the most effective solutions. The two players have teamed up to open a highly energy efficient data center in Deventer, The Netherlands. Through a press release, the two companies informed that this is a result of a strategic partnership between Hitachi and GDS for the collaboration and deployment of highly energy efficient data centers.

The companies have also announced that the data center will be opened on September 23, 2010. During the day customers will have the opportunity to experience Hitachi's technologies for energy efficient data centers.

GDS, as one of the investors in the ECO2DC initiative, is planning to develop the most energy efficient data center in Europe, based in The Netherlands. GDS decided to partner with Hitachi, because its energy efficient modular data centers are considered one of the industry’s best. Earlier this year, GDS and Hitachi entered a partnership to initiate further development in this field.

Hitachi’s data center initiatives date back to 2007, when the Hitachi Group launched its energy efficient data center project. The project was driven by the increasing demand for IT equipment and facilities in data centers. Through its technology, the company also sought to lower the environmental impact.

The company’s focus on reduction of environmental footprint led to the development of a modular data center solution, which has been available in Japan since January 2009. The solution optimizes the configuration of the cooling units to obtain the highest level of power efficiency in a high-density arranged data center. This enables data center operators to boost the utilization of space to the highest potential, while reducing CO2 emissions considerably.

GDS on the other hand has been supporting the growth in green data center industries throughout Europe. The company is a renowned provider of optimal data center capacity, cooling, managed services, SAN, security, server, software and data storage technology as well as services for green data centers and resellers in European countries such as Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands.

“We are very pleased with the opening of the facility and the strategic partnership with Green Data Systems. GDS is one of our excellent distributors in the EMEA region and the contribution to reducing environmental impact is remarkable. As part of this partnership, we will contribute to society by decreasing our customers' ecological footprint. Further progress in our data center technology will enable the expansion of Hitachi's modular data center business in Europe,” Akira Shimizu, Managing Director of Hitachi Europe Ltd., said.

Hitachi announced that it will be obtaining operating data from the data center for research purposes to further improve energy efficiency. The site will also be a showcase of Hitachi's technologies for energy efficient data centers to customers throughout Continental Europe.
