Elliptical Mobile Solutions Granted Fourth U.S. Patent

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Elliptical Mobile Solutions (EMS), which develops micro-modular data centers, has announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted the company its fourth patent for a groundbreaking technology to be used in data centers.

In a release, officials with EMS said all four patents together provide data centers with revolutionary technologies that not only provide huge savings in capital, but also considerable savings in operational and energy costs.

The patents apply to company’s “relocatable, adaptive, suspension, equipment rack” (R.A.S.E.R), and “self-propelled, electronic, armored rack” (S.P.E.A.R.).

Additionally, the company offers a smaller version of the S.P.E.A.R., which is called the “climate-controlled campus, self-propelled, electronic, adaptable rack” (C3 (News - Alert)-S.P.E.A.R.).

EMS’ patents give the company with the proprietary rights to an adaptive suspension system. This suspension system is designed to completely eliminate the problems of harsh motion, shock and vibration for rack-mounted equipments, says company.

Simon Rohrich, co-founder of EMS, said in the release, 'EMS's adaptive suspension patent allows for the rapid deployment of enterprise-class equipment over any terrain. It also eliminates damage to the equipment in any disaster scenario including earthquakes, fires, hurricanes and tornados.'

EMS also holds patents for a closed loop cooling system that reduces electrical consumption by up to 50 percent compared to traditional data centers.

Rohrich added, 'The closed loop cooling system uses a pre-engineered airflow and cooling built-in that is optimized to efficiently deal with the current and future demands of the world's most powerful computer equipment.'

According to Rohrich, EMS's closed loop cooling facilitates containment of the hot and cold isle within the rack in such a way that the cooling is applied directly to the equipment. Since, the equipment is enclosed in a small enclosure, optimal temperature control can be obtained.

Officials with EMS said the company’s products reduce the footprint required to store the equipments by nearly 75 percent compared to traditional data centers, thereby providing additional energy, capital and operational cost savings.

According to Stockwell, the company’s technology provides the lowest cost solution per kilowatt of compute capacity in the market place, which is as low as $3,600/KW.

Stockwell added, 'Our goal is to move the data center industry from being a huge consumer of electricity to being a small consumer of clean energy.'

The newly granted patent is an addition to EMS's intellectual property portfolio including 26 patents-pending in 30 countries including the United States, South Korea, China, Canada, India and the 25 countries of the EP (European Patent) region.
