Mellanox 10 and 40GigE Adapter Products Support New InfiniBand Trade's RoCE Standards

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Mellanox (News - Alert) Technologies, Ltd. is a global provider of high-performance, end-to-end connectivity solutions for data center servers and storage systems. Mellanox Technologies recently announced that its line of 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet adapters will support the InfiniBand Trade Association's recently announced specification.

This specification mainly targets the additional deployment of high-performance and low-latency applications in the enterprise data center: Remote Direct Memory Access, or "RDMA," over Converged Ethernet, or "RoCE."

RoCE takes the low-latency and efficiency benefits of InfiniBand to the data center Ethernet fabric. Also, it holds the guarantee to carry the benefits of low latency to a wider class of data center and cloud applications which is crucially important.

Low-latency is a key characteristic of clusters made out of commodity x86 servers which delivers higher transactions per second and enables high clustering efficiency. These two features will lead to higher ROI and competitive benefits for organizations. This has been recognized in high-performance computing, data warehousing, and financial applications. It is more commonly used in cloud deployments where clusters play an important role in delivering elasticity.

IBTA based technologies played a vital role in the progression of these markets and applications. RoCE make use of the loss less Ethernet enhancements such as those being delivered by the work of the IEEE (News - Alert) DCB work group. This is to bring superior latency and quality or service while reducing the cost and power expenditure in Ethernet adapters by enabling simpler, purpose-built RDMA implementations in hardware.

Sujal Das, who is the senior director of product management said "The growth of Extreme Transaction Processing applications, and elastic compute and storage clusters for cloud computing are making low-latency Ethernet a key requirement for data centers. We look forward to delivering to the market new RoCE-based adapter products that will allow these classes of data center and cloud applications to deliver significantly higher jobs per second and ROI using the Ethernet fabric."

Mellanox, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California and Yokneam, Israel, delivers products with superior bandwidth, performance, scalability, power conservation and cost-effectiveness. Also, Mellanox combines multiple legacy network technologies into one future-proof solution. Its products have been chosen by various Fortune 500 data centers and the world's most powerful supercomputers due to its high performance and scalability.
