Piedmont EMC’s (News - Alert) “Beat the Peak” program has been enhanced with the inclusion of SMS text messaging service from TextPower, to offer real-time alerts to its members. Customers in six counties of North Carolina near Raleigh-Durham are members of this program, which is run by Piedmont EMC, an electric cooperative owned by members themselves.
In a release, Richard Mabbott, COO of Piedmont said, “Piedmont EMC’s focus on lowering our wholesale power costs resulted in finding a text messaging service to support our Beat the Peak voluntary program. The text messaging service needed to depict a professional product, not infringe upon our members privacy, be cost effective and easily implemented by our employees. TextPower was able to meet these objectives and they continue to provide excellent customer service for their product.”
Members are encouraged to switch off unnecessary lights and adjust thermostats during expected heavy usage phases. As part of the program, members are offered real-time alerts for the same before these peak phases. Peak load periods, where the maximum amount of electricity is consumed, are used to calculate a major part of power supply expenses. Piedmont can decrease its power expenses if consumers decrease their energy usage during peak periods, thereby resulting in monetary benefits for the members.
Providing a dependable power supply with minimum expenses has been the aim of Piedmont Electric. Beat the Peak will help in reducing the consumption of energy during peak periods, thereby helping the organization to sustain higher power expenses. The requirements for expensive generating plants can be postponed by decreasing the maximum billing load.
TextPower’s increasing status for offering excellent service in the utility industry has been instrumental for being selected by Piedmont Electric. Another factor for choosing TextPower was its capability to integrate with Piedmont’s IVR system.
Mark Nielsen, co-founder and executive chairman of TextPower said, “We’re honored that Piedmont EMC chose us to provide text messaging to their members in order to reduce peak usage in real-time. By integrating our text messaging platform with their Milsoft IVR system, Piedmont is able to easily reach their customers immediately, while significantly improving customer service and reducing their power costs.”
