It looks like first Mass. baby of 2013 was born in Cape Cod

HYANNIS, Jan 01, 2013 (Cape Cod Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- At 11:45 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Max Benjamin Pierre appeared ready to draw his first breath in the world. The midwife, nurses, certainly his mother Marie, were ready for him. But Max had other ideas, said Marie's brother Jean Meritus.

Although his head had crowned, Max retreated for another 15 minutes.

"I thought, this is it," Jean recalled. "Then he went back in." "All she wanted was to have the baby out, she was not concerned about the time," he added nodding towards his sister resting in her Cape Cod Hospital room this afternoon.

It turns out that Max was right on time. Born at five seconds after midnight, the 8 pound, 21-inch baby boy was right on time for being the first baby born in Massachusetts in 2013, and possibly the first born in the continental United States.

A spokeswoman at Massachusetts General Hospital said they were keeping track of New Year's arrivals via an interhospital email chain and that, until Max Pierre became known, Newton Wellesley Hospital, with a baby born at 12:08 a.m. was considered the first born in the state.

An Internet search showed a baby girl born in Guam seven seconds after midnight and an unidentified baby born at "the stroke of midnight" with no definite time mentioned, in Berkeley, Calif., and a baby girl that was also born at "the stroke of midnight" in Reno, Nev., as among the first born in 2013 in the U.S. and U.S territories.

First birth of 2013 honors rested lightly on Max's brow as he yawned, and fell back to sleep while an adoring family gathered round his mother's hospital bed. Max's father Imenes Pierre is still in Haiti where he owns his own business.

"'I was waiting for that news,'" Jean Meritus said, quoting Pierre's response to Max's birth.
