TMCnet Smarter Utility Week in Review: Pipeline for Opportunity and More Smart Grid News

By Erin Harrison, Executive Editor, Cloud Computing

The smart grid space was alive and well with news this week related to the smarter utility and TMCnet editors and reporters were there to cover them.

Kicking off the week, Crossfire Media’s Carl Ford (News - Alert) professed that if we want to create jobs in the U.S. and figure out how to take advantage of our Canadian friends, the oil fields in Canada represent a great opportunity.

“There is a keystone pipeline that would go from Alberta to Port Arthur, Texas. Making a pipeline to the U.S. for refining oil can make a great partnership and set up thousands of jobs,” wrote Ford.

Another aspect that applies to the pipeline is the opportunity to provide a backbone for the smart grid. To read the full article, click here.

In smart grid news, Infrax Systems and Defendec recently entered into a distribution agreement for the North American utility market, TMCnet reported.

Infrax Systems, Inc. is one of the leading global providers of unified Smart Grid-related products and services for the Energy and Utility industries. Defendec is one of the leading providers of military grade surveillance systems.  The Smartdec fulfills the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards mandated by the National Electric Reliability Council (NERC (News - Alert)) for perimeter intrusion protection and security.

To improve its smart metering product with a Web-based energy consumption and management platform for consumers, Siemens (News - Alert), an electronics and electrical engineering major, is using Digi X-Grid Solutions, Digi International announced this week.

The M2M solutions provider said the partnership helps Siemens to connect Smart Siemens Automated Metering and Information System (AMIS (News - Alert)) meters to the iDigi Device Cloud via the Digi ConnectPort X Wireless M-Bus gateway – ultimately helping Smart Grid users ensure real-time, IP-based monitoring and control of home energy devices beyond the electric meter. And closing this week, TMCnet’s Susan Campbell explained why the concept of the connected home seems very George Jetson, yet its reality could be just around the corner.

The continued move toward the smarter utility and the smart grid is generating demand for innovative solutions that will make the connected home a reality, Campbell reported, pointing to a GigaOM piece where Craig Barratt, president of Qualcomm’s Atheros (News - Alert) division said that the connected home – or the “connected everything” – is actually closer than we realize. The continued focus on the smarter utility will certainly play a role.
