NTT DOCOMO Inc., a provider of advanced mobile telecommunications services, announced that it will provide its customers with an enhanced 3G-mobile managed service that will be equipped with Symantec’s PGP Whole Disk Encryption with Remote Disable and Destroy, based on the Anti-Theft Technology by Intel.
Symantec (News - Alert) offers a wide range of security, storage and systems management solutions that enable its individual and enterprise customers to secure and manage their vital information and devices; while NTT (News - Alert) DOCOMO leverages its i-mode mobile e-mail/Internet platform and FOMA 3G mobile service based on W-CDMA solutions to fulfill the needs of more than 57 million customers in Japan, which will be made available beginning April 2011 and will help them in protecting the sensitive data saved upon their computers.
Both Symantec and DOCOMO have jointly developed the new service that will enable DOCOMO customers to either lock their laptop computer remotely, or destroy the data saved upon its hard drive. It will also be helpful for administrators as they will be able to remotely disable a lost or stolen laptop via a secure SMS message that has to be sent through the DOCOMO 3G network management server. If the user uses the laptop computer overseas, the secure SMS message has to be sent through a roaming network.
Additionally, the new service will allow the DOCOMO customers to remotely block the boot process and prevent access to encrypted data. They will be able modify the access to the laptop computer even when its main power is switched off. The service leverages Symantec’s PGP (News - Alert) encryption technology that maintains the security of the data irrespective of the location where the computer goes missing, and even if the person who’s stolen it knows the access password. In the event of recovery of the lost or stolen laptop, the users can quickly reactivate their data and recover the original data within a few minutes.
George Thangadurai, general manager of PC Client Services at Intel (News - Alert) Corp. said the company is very pleased to collaborate with two industry leaders to bring to market a very robust security service combining worldwide mobile broadband reach with strong disk encryption software and the robustness of Intel Anti-Theft Technology for data and asset protection. Thangdurai added that DOCOMO is demonstrating their leadership in innovation by rolling out a solution that helps businesses of all sizes protect their most precious asset, which is information.
Earlier in January 2011, NTT DoCoMo, Inc. partnered with China Mobile (News - Alert) Communications Corporation, a China-based provider of mobile telecommunications services and KT Corporation, a South Korea-based provider of telecom services; to provide mobile customers with new experiences and greater convenience in the growing regional market of Northeast Asia.
