A new telecommunications company, GECOMSA (Guinea Ecuatorial Comunicaciones Sociedad Anonima) has been launched in Equatorial Guinea to improve wireless and Internet connectivity.
GECOMSA is a joint venture between the government of Equatorial Guinea, which has a 51 percent stake, and China 49 percent. Industry experts view this launch as an effort by the government to overcome the sector's limitations, which are currently operated by two companies, GETESA and Hits.
Maria del Mar Bindang Eneme, GECOMSA director, said that the telecommunications company's main goal is to improve and guarantee mobile telecommunications as well as Internet services for its subscribers.
"GECOMSA is a great addition to Equatorial Guinea's telecommunications sector as we have experienced some shortcomings," said Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, president, in a statement.
Mbasogo said that GECOMSA will expand and improve the country’s communications' reach and take it to a new level of telecommunications.
The Republic of Equatorial Guinea (Republica de Guinea Ecuatorial) is the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa, and one of the smallest nations on the continent.
In the late-1990s, American companies helped discover the country's oil and natural gas resources, which only within the last five years began contributing to the global energy supply. Equatorial Guinea is now working to serve as a pillar of stability and security in its region of West Central Africa. The country hosted the 2011 Summit of the African Union.
