TMCnet Telepresence Week in Review

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

Welcome to the latest version of the TMCnet Telepresence (News - Alert) Week in Review were we provide you with all the top headlines in video communications technologies from this past week.

Well known video conferencing provider Skype (News - Alert) made headlines this week when Grammy nominee Jan Linder-Koda, owner of Angel Diva Music, announced she will offer three singing lessons for $100 via Skype or in studio, for students who are interested.

Using telepresence technology to connect with the professional will allow students to learn Grammy-winning vocal techniques regardless of where in the world they are located.

Also this week, technology company Apple (News - Alert) made headlines – in addition to their CEO resignation news – when its FaceTime (News - Alert) solution was used to allow a bridesmaid to attend her friends wedding via her iPad.

Because the woman could not travel cross country due to all the costs associated with airfare etc. she instead found telepresence as a viable alternative and connected to the ceremony virtually using her iPad and Facetime video calling software.

In the healthcare market, telepresence solutions are used to improve patient/doctor communications and now even emergency medical services.

Sierra Nevada Corporation has announced a new Transport Telemedicine (T2) capability developed under a U.S. Army, Utility Helicopter Program Office 'Operational Situational Awareness – Medevac' contract that will make it possible to capture and communicate patient care/condition info beginning at from the Point of Injury all the way through to disposition to definitive care at a 5th echelon (CONUS) medical facility.

In a bid to lower the obstacles for VARs trying to make a mark in the videoconferencing market, value-added distributor Jenne, also announced this week it expanded its LifeSize (News - Alert) Onboarding program.

LifeSize is a high definition video conferencing provider and recently awarded Jenne for being their Fastest Growth Distributor in the U.S.

Finally this week, TMCnet contributor Susan Campbell wrote an article, ‘Video Conferencing as a Powerful Telepresence Tool,’ that focused on the ways professionals can make use of telepresence in the work environment as a critical strategy for success. Check out the article HERE.

That’s all for this week. Be sure to check back with TMCnet.com for all the latest Telepresence news as it happens. Until next week…
