The Office is History, Remote Work is the Future

By Julie Griffin, Contributing Writer

As you can imagine, for people in London the daily commute to the office can be utter hell. But cursing the 2012 Olympics and everything it stands for is not the ideal beginning of a productive workday. There is an alternative that many employees have identified as the work environment worthy of a gold medal: remote work.

Powwownow released an infographic that reveals that 59 percent of employees polled out of 1,091 across the U.K. believe that remote work is the way of the future. But the fact that the majority of employees would opt for more freedom isn’t as surprising as the notion that 41 percent prefer to keep things the same. Perhaps some of the 41 percent have differing opinions now the games are underway.

It’s clear to see why remote work is considered ideal among the staff – flexible hours, the option to dress casually, less cost associated with the commute, etc. But what’s in it for the employers?

The CEO of Powwownow, Simon Curry, revealed that the demand for its services has increased, perhaps indicating that employers are considering alternative work methods. He said, “We have noticed an increase in demand for our services, with 30 percent year on year growth.  This is phenomenal and clearly shows there is demand from businesses that are looking for alternative ways of working - something that is only set to continue, especially with the Olympics around the corner. It will be interesting to see what impact this summer has on those businesses that allow flexible working to cope with the increase of people in our capital and whether as a result of this, people start to integrate remote working much more into their business ethos - it is definitely something we will be watching closely.”

As London’s density increases for the Olympics, many employees will experience additional stress over planning their daily commute. The stress felt around the office will undoubtedly have a negative impact on productivity. However, since we live in an age of mobility with tools pertaining to unified communication (UC), it should be easier than ever for employers to rethink a productive workday.
