Enterprise Video Implementations - Well Beyond Conferencing and Collaboration

There’s far more to enterprise use of video than fixed and mobile conferencing.

In fact, thinking visual means realizing that application types are predominant in the service provider world and are also relevant, revenue generators in corporate America. Two growing categories bear this out:

1. Video Surveillance

Service providers such as cable giant Comcast (News - Alert) have been fiercely marketing this offering to homes as a new supplement to its expanding bundle of broadband-enabled services.

2. In-Store Marketing

While service providers rush IPTV (News - Alert) service-driven packages to the home, household name retailers including Wal-Mart and 7-Eleven are using video to drive sales via monitors and/or digital signage. They can even carry advertising and promos for products not sold by the store.

What works for service providers, when adapted, also works for enterprises.

Enterprise IT needs a clear, 360 degree view of the video industry landscape to avoid missing opportunities that others have turned into ROI-driven applications of the visual media.

With that in mind, application conception and the launch by enterprises is a focus at Video World Conference & Expo  on Friday, October 5 in Austin, Texas. The specific session titled: Apps –olutely! Creating Business Programs for Wired and Wireless Networks will feature top executive speakers from mobiDEOS and Harris Corp. (News - Alert)

Both companies have been advancing of late, drawing interest from IT and business managers in charge of expanding their companies’ brand.

Mobile Surveillance for Businesses

Earlier this week, mobiDEOS unveiled new applications that bring mobile video surveillance benefits to tablet users with offerings for the iPad3, Kindle Fire and Nook. The company’s MobieCamViewer for example, works with a fast-expanding list of consumer devices including earlier iPads and Android (News - Alert) tablets.

The new app offers faster processing and higher resolution over earlier generation iPads. But it can be used beyond home surveillance and DVR control. Enterprise markets include property managers, law enforcement agencies and business owners.

“The tablet occupies that space where the user is mobile but not ‘on the move,’ where the smart phone and the convenience of 3G and 4G connectivity is still king,”  said mobiDEOS CEO Sri Palasamudram in prepared comments. “Many of our tablet users prefer these devices to the desktop or laptop even when in a fixed location, as they offer far quicker login times and tremendous ease of use. This is especially important in situations where users need to make quick decisions in response to unusual activity or a security event.”

7-Eleven’s Deployment

While mobiDEOS has been focused on surveillance for businesses, Harris Corp. has been working with partners to help store chains boost sales using networks connecting digital signage. 7-Eleven has cashed in on this emerging trend and has been able to sell advertising on the systems.

Harris claims it has helped the convenience store chain deploy on of the largest retail signage/IPTB networks which is live in over 4,300 stores and features advertising placed by ABC Television to help monetize the network.

Wal-Mart

The low-price retail chain has been using a centrally operated IPTV system which features TV monitors located throughout stores to direct shoppers to specific products and departments. The video-enabled undertaking allows the nationwide firm the ability and flexibility to promote – via the installed monitors – to consumers products on a per-region basis.

The household name retailer is among the first enterprise to deploy a video program and system to focus on marketing and sales – with bigger bucks the target – as opposed to more popular areas such as videoconferencing, collaboration and training.

Though most think telco-provided home video services when they hear the acronym IPTV, business and technology managers in corporate America need to know that video is very much alive and doing very well in the enterprise sector.

Give us three days and we’ll give you the video world!
