Quickflix, an icon in online streaming video and on demand service in Australia, will be using Verimatrix's (News - Alert) VCAS – Video Content Authority System – in a bid to put more security into its online offerings.
Quickflix offers video rentals on demand, much the same way as iTunes or Blockbuster Online does, and as such, needed a way to keep that content protected from outside intrusion, maintaining the safety of customer records and the satisfaction of content providers that only paying customers would be getting in on their streaming offerings.
Quickflix is regarded as the leader in online movie rentals, also offering up a DVD by mail program similar to Blockbuster Online and Netflix. Security on its offerings was therefore very important to Quickflix in general.
Security was also difficult to provide for Quickflix, as the company offers their streaming solution on a variety of devices, including most recently for iOS devices. This allowed users access to a variety of movies and television shows, including those of Sony, NBC Universal (News - Alert) and Warner Bros., but also led to an important point about securing those offerings.
Verimatrix's VCAS system, meanwhile, filled the security demands nicely by offering up not only a security solution fit for multiple devices, but enhanced HLS security similar to that found in managed IP-based networks.
Quickflix also uses VCAS MultiRights, which in turn gives PlayReady user rights management a boost by improving PlayReady's "multi-device subscriber domain content" with VCAS's "cross-DRM super domain management systems." This combination allows for easy movement across devices, which in turn gives users an extra note of satisfaction in that they can take their streaming on the road with them just as easily as they can watch it on home computers or televisions.
That kind of security in Quickflix's lineup allows them to, in turn, better negotiate favorable terms from content providers, granting Quickflix's users better access to content and making Quickflix a more worthwhile product offering for its current and potential customers.
Considering the steady worldwide growth of the streaming video market, anything a company like Quickflix can do to better distinguish itself from its competitors is well worth looking into. Providing a secure, multi-device format for users and content providers alike should be just the stroke they need to keep ahead of the pack.
