MobiTV (News - Alert), a provider of the comprehensive TV Everywhere solution, announced Thursday that its network DVR, the MobiTV nDVR, will be released as a standalone, licensable solution to cable television service providers, wireless carriers and other network operators.

The device, previously only available as part of MobiTV's end-to-end multiscreen platform, is capable of navigating complex rights management across countries.

The network DVR is capable of recording and storing television content like other DVR devices, but information is stored in the cloud rather than on the device itself. Because of this, there is no limit to the number of programs users can record, while content can be retrieved from anywhere inside or outside the home on connected devices.

The elimination of local storage also allows the nDVR to be extremely thin and light, needing only an Internet connection and an HDMI display to work.

The nDVR provides users with access to a number of unique features, including:

"Master copies," which are cloud-based recordings of all channels offered by a service provider accessible by customers. These basically allow users to catch up on missed programming without having to record anything. "Personal copies" are, of course, individual programs written to the cloud. These are secured, fully cacheable and support scalable for efficient delivery.

MobiTV's patent-pending technology is able to handle the massive amounts of data required to support mass-market deployments, allowing for organic scaling which can span efficiently across multiple geographic points. Of course, the nDVR is also able to seamlessly handle digital rights requirements for a number of countries.

"Rights management has long been a difficult process for service operators to navigate on an international scale," MobiTV CEO Charlie Nooney said in a news release. "The MobiTV nDVR removes barriers for operators and provides the solution for a true TV Everywhere experience."

Earlier this year, MobiTV collaborated with Amino to develop a next-generation TV Everywhere offering, combining Amino's set-top hardware with MobiTV's DRM and streaming technologies.
