Yap.TV runs a Social TV Guide app for iPhone and iPad that integrates a comprehensive programming schedule with Twitter and Facebook (News - Alert). Once available only to English-speaking customers in the U.S., the app is now available for customers in Europe, Latin America and Canada.
Now, people who speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and English can set their television viewing schedules collaboratively thanks to yap.TV. The company has partnered with 10,000 new providers across the globe to nearly triple its potential reach.
If expansion goes as expected, yap.TV could reach one billion customers and one-third of the world’s television sets.
“Social TV is a global phenomenon and we are excited to reach a new milestone as the first worldwide Social TV guide,” said yap.TV CEO, Trevor Stout, about the announcement. “Our vision is to enable users to share their passion for favorite TV shows with Facebook friends and fans around the world.”
When using the yap.TV social guide, television enthusiasts can view a full program schedule with clearly marked new episodes on their iOS second screens. Users can also create reminders and notifications for individual shows.
Users who connect on the Social TV Guide can interact online while they simultaneously view programs. Feeds can also be generated on specific programs along with user-generated polls and real-time private group chat capabilities.
Additionally, the guide offers HD graphics for music and television shows in a “tap-and-swipe” format that replaces the traditional grid from TV Guide.
“Searching for what is on TV has never been more fun,” said Stout.
For television partners worldwide that want to drive audience engagement, yap.TV provides a social consumer front end for traditional TV distributors as well as for OTT, IPTV (News - Alert) and TV content-related applications.
Yap.TV accesses its program guide from Rovi and Tribune Media Services.
Specific new countries reached include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Poland and the United Kingdom.
