Going with the announcement that Entropic Communications. Inc., a competent semiconductor solutions designer and producer, made, EchoStar’s recently launched Ultra Slim Box (News - Alert) will be using an Entropic made system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution. The Ultra Slim Box is a high definition TV recorder that integrates Freeview + HD and access to Smart TV entertainment to deliver ultimate enjoyment to its users.
The Ultra Slim Box, which is EchoStar’s slimmest digital TV recorder ever in the market, features the capabilities to not only watch a live-stream of TV content but also to pause, record and rewind the stream. These capabilities that have all been crammed into this low-profile slim device are bound to effortlessly deliver satisfying entertainment experience to customers.

The miniaturization could not have been achieved without the use of Entropic’s (News - Alert) PNX849x, a highly-integrated, low-power SoC silicon chip. The dual tuner terrestrial DVR gadget manipulates Entropic SoC design with an ARM Cortex - 49 Superscalar 1250 DMIPS CPU to deliver the necessary performance to power heavyweight applications.
Moreover, Entropic managed to make the SoC solution more power efficient by incorporating an innovative power management system that allows for a comprehensive power controlling system that can put the device into and “ultra low-power standby operation.”
Commenting on the adoption of Entropic’s solution into the Slim Box, Rhod Williams, senior president and general manager, EchoStar, Europe, said, "The Ultra Slim Box is the complete entertainment solution and puts the consumer in control of their digital entertainment experience”.
He went on to explain that, "As the slimmest digital TV recorder in the world, we selected Entropic's SoC to reduce the power profile, while ensuring a powerful processing device that would offer media-rich navigation and the ability to access networked video content, applications and advanced media services."
On the other hand, Entropic’s senior vice president and general manager, Mark Samuel, acknowledges the expectations that come with the established relationship. He said, “We understood their need for a silicon solution that would optimize the TV viewing experience … Our silicon and software complement the brilliant design of the Ultra Slim Box and ensures that despite its compact form factor, the feature sets are not compromised.”
