The content on the Internet is moving towards video to advertise, inform and teach consumers. Streaming video content without any glitches or lags requires a combination of the right hardware and software. The collaboration of Texas Instrument (TI), Advantech (News - Alert) and eInfochips has resulted in the development of HLS (HTTP live streaming) protocol stack suited for applications servers that deploy high performance video streams.

According to the specs, the HLS streaming solution will be able to supports inbound and outbound multimedia transcoding, multimedia stream trans-rate, multiple containers, multiple device and resolution rates, configurable profile and IP network parameters and bit rates.

At the core of the system is the TI Multicore DSP (digital signal processor), the industry’s highest performing multicore processor which performs five times faster than any DSP.

"As video consumption on various end-devices continues to grow exponentially, this high-performance HLS solution will be ideal to scale video delivery capacities," said Ramesh Kumar, business manager multicore processors at TI.

Using HLS gives the service provider a set of advantages when it is used for live events and on demand video playback. You can reduce the expense attached to bandwidth usage by optimizing the quality of the video according to the conditions of the network. HLS is also capable of handling changes between high and low bandwidth environments and it can be adjusted to include dynamically changing security tokens.

David Lin, senior director of DSP and video solutions at Advantech said, "The eInfochips HLS implementation optimized for video transcoding functions on Advantech's DSP PCIe cards offers a highly scalable and adaptable solution for streaming video to all kinds of display devices in different resolutions. We believe the partnership between eInfochips, TI and Advantech will set new standards in video processing innovation and performance."

The applications can be used for medical imaging diagnostics, mission critical applications with high broadband and network centric demands and multimedia infrastructure apps.

The TI DSP offers standard and high definition application from 8 bit 4:2:0 MPEG 2 apps to 10 bit 4:2:2 H.264. This makes it ideal for applications with multimedia gateways with high volumes of content.

"We are excited by this collaboration with Advantech and TI. We have developed this HLS protocol stack, and can easily adapt and optimize it to suit specific customer requirements." said Ajatshatru Dhaval, Sales Director at eInfochips.

The combined effort of these companies has resulted in ceating a product with many applications across different industries. It can be applied in Aerospace, Consumer Electronics, Entertainment, Healthcare, Retail, Surveillance and Telecommunications.
