Over 30,000 SIM Boxes Eliminated by Roamware in Less than Six Months

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

A well-known provider of mobile roaming solutions, Roamware (News - Alert) had launched a SIM Box Detector platform late last year. Roamware says that it has seen a strong demand for this SIM Box Detector platform.  In less than six months since its launch, Roamware has deployed the solution for six network operators.  The solution is also in the trial stages with more than a dozen operators around the world. With the help of this solution, telecom operators can eliminate unauthorized usage of GSM Gateways which is done to avoid paying toll or interconnect fees. This mechanism of bypass mobile termination is usually used by rogue international transit carriers, which impacts the termination revenues of mobile operator.

The Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, Product Management at Roamware, Dr. John Jiang said that the SIM Box Detector is a comprehensive, multi-dimensional quality management solution, which is installed at the heart of the operator network. He added that the solution is able to simulate calls from foreign destinations to a range of numbers within the network. The solution also traces the routing of the call to effectively identify SIM box installations on a 24/7 basis. This will thus improve network congestion, voice quality and revenues in the long term.

In a typical setup, interconnect or termination fees account for 15% of operator revenues. Now with SIM Boxes in play, operators incur revenue drainage between 5%-20%.  More than half a million unique SIM cards boxes used by GSM Gateway (News - Alert) operators around the world have been identified over the past year alone.

Dr. Jiang, added that today, SIM Boxes are prominent in many parts of the world, especially Latin America, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Operators face may issues like identifying fraud numbers, including identifying inaccurate SIM card numbers and increased usage of the networks to run tests. He added that Roamware is able to overcome these challenges with a 99.999% accuracy rate in tracking SIM Boxes and blocking the SIM cards on a real time basis. Over the last six months, Roamware has identified and deactivated tens of thousands of SIM Box gateways across regions, as part of the company's engagements with the GSM operators.
