Procera Releases PSM Version 5 of its PacketLogic Integration Software Suite

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Procera Networks (News - Alert) Inc., a developer of Evolved Deep Packet Inspection or DPI solutions, recently announced the release of version 5 of its PacketLogic integration software suite, PacketLogic Subscriber Manager (PSM).

Company sources said that this enhanced version will serve to improve performance, besides providing an upgraded design that enables 50,000 subscribers to be provisioned per second. Version 5 is also the first PSM version, which will feature a new administration user interface or GUI for enabling intuitive configuration, integration setup, creation and modification of service packages, and adjustments to accommodate new network conditions.

In a release Jon Lindén, vice president of global marketing at Procera said, “PacketLogic Subscriber Manager has quickly become a central component in virtually all PacketLogic installations.”

“DPI has always offered application awareness. Adding subscriber, location and device awareness opens a Pandora’s (News - Alert) box of opportunities in network forensics, network optimization and service creation,” Lindén added.

The core functionality in PSM is the mapping of subscriber ID, called SID, to the then current IP address or IP addresses. This allows policies to be defined per subscriber, even in case IP addresses are dynamically assigned.

This is achieved by integrating PSM with operations or OSS and authentication systems like RADIUS, policy control and DHCP through standard interfaces. This allows individual and personalized service plans to be implemented, managed and monitored. Standard PSM interfaces are also used to export billing and charging information to BSS and OCS, added Procera officials.

PSM also enables greater functionality features to classify network traffic based on network location and what device is being used as in location and device awareness. Intelligence about when, where and with what device users access the network helps in removing congestion and verifying validity of offered service plans. PSM is deployed at most of Procera’s Tier-1 service provider customers. This serves to provide the necessary scalability and performance that is required to match increase in traffic, policies, and number of subscribers.

Alexander Haväng, CTO and vice president of engineering at Procera said, “The performance of PSM version 5 exceeds what I originally envisioned when we designed the product. This extra capacity leaves headroom for growth, even with our largest Tier-1 deployments. Optionally, it allows for innovative use of further capabilities with guaranteed performance.”

Procera Networks Inc. delivers Evolved DPI solutions that help service providers to create awareness and also control and protect their applications and networks. Its core product suite, the PacketLogic line of platforms, uses Procera’s advanced identification engine, DRDL or Datastream Recognition Definition Language. This helps provide accurate identification of network traffic in real-time.
