Ikanos Communications, a provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, reportedly announced that Teracom has selected the Ikanos (News - Alert) Solos communications processors for their high-performance integrated access devices.

Teracom, an Indian company, designs and manufactures innovative broadband technology solutions in technologies like DSL, GEPON, WiMAX (News - Alert) and 3G to enable telecommunications at very high speeds. The integrated access devices from Teracom will be used to extend advanced wireless, voice and data services to millions of consumers throughout India, and other countries in the region, company officials said.

“We chose the Ikanos Solos communications processors because they were the most cost effective turnkey solution in the market, meeting the requirements of our carriers,” Rajeev Venkat, director at Teracom, said in a statement.

Ikanos' Solos family of chipsets, according to company officials, is designed to reduce the total cost of ownership and time to market for network equipment manufacturers. Ikanos provides Integrated Software on Silicon, a comprehensive suite of embedded broadband communications software that enables product customization and reduces first-time and subsequent design cycles.

Solos-WV2, the latest addition to the Solos family, is a powerful single channel communications processor for integrated voice and data services. The chipset includes an ARM (News - Alert)-core, integrated voice processing and 802.11b/g wireless networking. The product also supports 802.11n applications.

With Ikanos' semiconductors and development tools, Teracom is able to deliver products suited to the service provider market, one that supports high quality Voice over Internet Protocol, wireless networking and advanced data services.

“Teracom plays a critical role in the deployment of broadband services in India and provides much of the equipment in this dynamic and growing region,” Craig Garen, COO at Ikanos, said in a statement. “We look forward to helping Teracom launch this new family of broadband products, and developing subsequent generations on the Ikanos semiconductor and software platform.”

In another major development, Ikanos teamed with Aricent, a global provider of communications technology and services, for the launch of a production-ready platform for advanced next-generation broadband access products, TMCnet reported.
