A U.S. patent has been granted to Avistar (News - Alert) Communications Corp., provider of unified visual communications solutions. Avistar announced that the patent was granted in practical real-time bandwidth management. This is a critical feature in successful unified communications environments that utilize VoIP, video and instant messaging. As businesses are increasingly adopting VoIP, Audio/Videoconferencing, and other unified communications features, the patent technology will maximize the bandwidth utilization.
A unified bandwidth manager that hierarchically manages a group of service-specific bandwidth reservation and session management systems such as VoIP, two-way video, etc is addressed by the patent. These are commonly found in unified communications deployments. Until now, blocks of bandwidth were controlled by IT administrators with reservation/management systems. As a result, the applications were often slowed due to traffic overload in one system. This diminished user experiences and wasted unused bandwidth in each block.
The use of an automatic adaptive control system that provides traffic feedback and controls on an ongoing basis is covered by the newly granted patent. Hence the network is optimized through potential network bottlenecks, server traffic, streaming one-way video and other enterprise real-time applications.
In a release, Dr. Anton F. Rodde, President, Intellectual Property Division, Avistar said, "This patent marks a shift in the Avistar patent strategy. With over 15 years experience developing and deploying large scale desktop videoconferencing products, while offering one of the industry's most advanced and comprehensive set of bandwidth management features within these products, safeguarding our investment and intellectual property is a critical aspect of our overall product strategy."
According to Avistar's CMO, Stephen Epstein (News - Alert) real-time bandwidth management is reaching a critical crescendo as the number and complexity of video-enabled applications grow due to market demand. Avistar had recently introduced Business Pro Edition and its bandwidth management features. IT administrators are able to take their unified visual communications strategies to the next level with the help of such products. The value of these products is reinforced by the new patent.
Avistar has more than 15 years of experience in providing proven business-class desktop videoconferencing technology. Across a broad spectrum of industries, the solutions of Avistar are used with deployments ranging from 30-30,000 users. Further information on Avistar is available at www.avistar.com.
