FreedomVOICE Application Newber Brings iPhone-to-Landline Call Transfers

By Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor

Bringing new functionality to what industry insiders are calling the major IT development of 2008, an Encinitas, California-based provider of telephone communications solutions is introducing an application that’s designed to help iPhone (News - Alert) users transfer calls to nearby landlines, even during a call.

Officials at FreedomVOICE Systems say Newber Beta, unveiled this week at a wireless telecom show in San Francisco, uses positioning technology to accomplish the feat, saving money for iPhone users, avoiding dropped calls and conserving battery power.

The company’s president and chief executive officer, Eric Thomas – who will help deliver a presentation on hosted VoIP solutions at next week’s Internet Telephony Conference & Expo in Los Angeles – told TMCnet during an interview that the application is designed mostly for business users, though casual iPhone owners will benefit from the technology, as well.

“The added line functionality can greatly simplify communication for (business users) by separating private versus business calls,” Thomas told TMCnet. “Home use shares many of the same benefits as office or business use. Casual users can use Newber at home to avoid reception problems and save on minutes by taking their iPhone calls through their home phone.”

The commercial version of Newber will soon be available to iPhone users through the App Store, FreedomVOICE officials say.

Here’s how it works.

Newber Beta delivers an independent number that can be assigned to any phone, company officials say, a feature that spares the caller the task of dialing multiple numbers for mobile, home and work. Newber Beta also allows a person to take business calls on their private phone without giving out personal information, FreedomVOICE says.

One major feature of the application is its “Contact Finder.” With that feature, a Newber user will be able to simply tap a name on the contact list and all of that contact’s numbers will be automatically dialed in sequence – eliminating the tedious process of manually dialing one number after another.

About 100 beta licenses are available, and among those who already have signed up here for the chance to try it out is TMC President and Group Editor-in-Chief Rich Tehrani (News - Alert).

Tehrani, who recently purchased a 3G iPhone, often blogs about the device’s attributes – and detriments – as well as news surrounding the much-hyped device, including startling news out of Germany that the government there is banning VoIP for the iPhone because that technology tempts users to “jailbreak” the device.

Tehrani is among those whose application has been received, Thomas said, and the telecom insider stands a good chance of receiving a license with the first batch.

Thomas said during his interview with TMCnet that privacy was one of the consumer demands that spurred FreedomVOICE to create the Newber application.

“We find privacy to be a very important and complex issue for business professionals,” Thomas said. “Typically, they need to be easy to reach, so they advertise a single, private mobile phone number. But in return for that availability, they’re sacrificing a lot of their freedom.”

For example, Thomas said, business professionals often are tied to their mobile device, even when a better, landline phone is available. Yet many withhold their landline or business landline numbers, he said, because they still need the reliability of contact that mobile devices offer.

“Second, it becomes next to impossible to separate business calls from their private calls,” Thomas said. “How do they change jobs, start a new business, or go on vacation without getting calls they don’t want to receive?”

For Thomas, Newber gives back that freedom by separating business calls through a second line for the iPhone.

“Those calls can be sent to any nearby landline phone using the iPhone’s GPS, or the line can be turned off without blocking important private calls,” Thomas said, recommending two YouTube (News - Alert) videos Use A Nearby Landline and Business Only Do Not Disturb, for more details.
