MTS Launched in India's Rajasthan Region

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited, a joint venture between Sistema of Russia and the Shyam (News - Alert) Group of India, has launched its MTS brand in India’s north-western state of Rajasthan.

With this, the existing Rainbow brand of telephony services will now be rebranded with international MTS (News - Alert) products.  MTS provides mobile telephony services in six nations, and has a subscriber base of nearly 100 million globally.

Sistema (News - Alert) Shyam TeleServices had already launched the MTS brand in the Tamil Nadu/Chennai, as well as Kerala regions.

“We are delighted to rebrand ‘Rainbow’ in Rajasthan to the internationally acclaimed “MTS brand,” said Vsevolod Rozanov, president and chief executive officer of Sistema Shyam TeleServices. “Rainbow did exceedingly well for us and this is but a natural progression to rationalize the mobile telephony offerings from SSTL under a single brand name in India.”

Rozanov said that he is confident that the MTS brand will leverage on the strengths of Rainbow as far as customer centricity, diversity and choice of offerings as well as the quality of network coverage.

He said that MTS is a hugely successful and globally well-exposed international brand and will surely cut a niche in the increasingly volatile and dynamic Indian telecom market.

Alok Tandon, Managing Director of SSTL, said that the company’s focus remains to connect the 800 million Indians who are yet to be connected.

Tandon said that the company is committed to the development of India’s telecom infrastructure and services and will continue to offer unique offers to the customers as part of its growth strategy.

SSTL had initially launched operations in Rajasthan where it currently provides mobile telephony connections to over 600 towns and over 12,000 villages. The company, since the launch of its services in October 2008, has crossed a mobile subscriber-base of over half a million.

It aims to increase the level of telecom penetration in the nation by offering subscribers access to superior connectivity at affordable prices.

“We’ve had a great stint in Rajasthan so far, with more than 500,000 Mobile subscriber base. The entry of MTS will significantly accelerate the pace of our growth and augment our efforts in continuing to maintain high performance standards and service delivery. By August we intend to increase our coverage to over 900 towns and over 13,000 villages of the state,” said Harsh Chandra, Chief Operating Officer, Rajasthan.

The company officials said that MTS products are now available in over 15,000 outlets and would be available very soon in more than 20,000 outlets by June’ 2009.
