Extreme Intros BlackDiamond 8900 Series Modules
By Vivek Naik, TMCnet Contributor
Extreme Networks has introduced the so-called “BlackDiamond 8900 Series” of modules, which are designed to slot in to switches as and when customers want to accommodate their 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports.
The company says that a total of three 8900 Series modules can be plugged into a single 8800 Series switch and together they can deliver a maximum of 582 10 GbE ports, or a maximum of 2,352 GbE ports, and provide 3.8 Terabits of data per second (Tbps) of switching capacity and 256 Gb of dual direction bandwidth per slot.
“With the introduction of the BlackDiamond 8900 Series modules, Extreme Networks (News - Alert) uniquely addresses data center performance, lower cost of ownership and flexibility in design,” said Paul Hooper, vice president and general manager of the volume products group for Extreme Networks. “The BlackDiamond 8900 Series modules meet these requirements by enabling dramatic scaling of the network while keeping costs in check.”
The combination of switching capacity and per slot bandwidth should match demand for interlinked Internet, broadband, and Wi-B technologies, as reported by TMCnet, because consumers, service providers and companies want simultaneous high-definition video streaming, Unified Communications (News - Alert), Web 2.0 social networks, infrastructural virtualization, Web-based SaaS applications, Network Operations Center offloading, remote backup and super quick environments for cloud computing.
“Organizations today are thinking about a few key things concerning their data center, including price (versus) performance for their transition to 10 gigabit, energy efficiency and the consistency and ease-of-operation of their total solution,” said Jon Oltsik, principal analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group. “With today’s announcement, Extreme Networks is providing a compelling solution that gives customers a high performance and cost-effective data center solution.”
The BlackDiamond 8900 Series modules allows customers to configure power management settings to the extent that when digital traffic volumes usage reduces, 70 percent savings can be achieved.
