ADTRAN Intros Layer 3 GbE Switch Series

By Vivek Naik, TMCnet Contributor

ADTRAN has announced that its introducing a new line of products, Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet Switches with multiple Small Form factor Pluggable ports.

Officials at the company say that the new network layer product line is designed with four 2.5 Gb per second SFP ports to bridge the gap between 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps. The SFP ports are placed in parallel to boost link speed above the capacity of a single port and increases the redundancy availability to improve reliability.

“ADTRAN’s NetVanta 1544 Series bridges the gap between 1G and 10G connectivity, allowing mid-market customers to balance their needs for more bandwidth with the requirement to keep budgets under control,” said Matthias Machowinski, Directing Analyst, Enterprise Voice and Data, Infonetics.

The company claims that the NetVanta 1544 platforms provide up to 40 percent of cost savings when compared with equivalent Layer 3 GbE switches and simultaneously deliver uplink ports with 2.5 times the bandwidth offered in standard switches.

“This is a good complement to ADTRAN’s existing switch portfolio and brings uniqueness to its offerings,” Machowinski said.

The NetVanta 1544 is an Ethernet switch that delivers a 28 port Layer 3 Gb platform with 24 fixed 10Base-T, 100Base-Tx and 1000Base-T ports, with four additional 2.5 Gbps SFP ports and is best suited for switch aggregation or Gigabit to the Desktop applications, say officials.

A 10Base-T port is for connectivity with a 10Base-T cable, which delivers 10 Megabits per second over a 100 meter length of Twisted pair category 3 cable; a 100Base-Tx port is for connectivity with a 100Base-Tx cable, which delivers 100 Mbps over a 100 m length of Twisted pair category 5 cable; and a 1000Base-T port is for connectivity with a 1000Base-T cable, which delivers 1000 Mbps over a 100 m length of double Twisted pair category 5 cable.

The NetVanta 1544P switch has identical features as the NetVanta 1544 Ethernet switch, plus offers Power over Ether for the 24 fixed ports and adds support for 802.3af and legacy PoE, supporting PoE-compliant networking devices, says ADTRAN. PoE IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3af is a system which transfers both data and electrical 48 Volts Direct Current nominal power with an allowed range of 36 to 57 V DC over 2 pairs on a category 3 or Category 5 cable.

Officials say the 1544F is an all fiber switch that provides 24 SFP ports of 1 Gbps each plus 4 SFP ports of 2.5 Gbps each, said company sources.

“The NetVanta 1544 complements our existing NetVanta switching portfolio and expands our addressable market,” said Tim Saunders (News - Alert), Vice President of Product Management, ADTRAN Enterprise Networks Division.

ADTRAN’s NetVanta product lines were recently awarded, as reported by TMCnet, the Technology Marketing Corporation Best of Show Award in the Editor’s Choice Category at TMC’s (News - Alert) ITEXPO East in Miami.

The award was in acknowledgement of ADTRAN’s NetVanta product lines that are used for IP business communication solutions. IP related technologies are, as reported earlier by TMC, among the most discussed, fastest growing, revenue generating, and future business sustaining solutions on the planet.

“Outstanding companies like ADTRAN with their award-winning solutions, help to validate ITEXPO’s (News - Alert) status as the leading forum in the communications industry,” said TMC President and Conference Chairman Rich Tehrani.

The market timing of NetVanta 1544 family is well in sync with a current trend, reported TMCnet, that indicates FTT Home equipment is experiencing strong growth with PON and E-FTTH devices being the forerunners; and a prediction that sees the shift from copper wiring to fibered wiring should see PON related infrastructure growing 23 percent by 2013 when compared with 2008.

Consumers, service providers and companies want simultaneous media rich content such as advertising, games, entertainment, and news that are delivered live, on demand and interactively, instantaneous zero latency, crystal clear video, voice and message IP communications, and large data information sharing, immediate transfer and receipt, and storage, says a TMCnet report, and high definition video streaming, Unified Communications (News - Alert), Web 2.0 social networks, Infrastructural virtualization, Web-based Software as a Solution applications, Network Operations Center offloading, remote backup and super quick environments for cloud computing, says another TMCnet report.

“The NetVanta 1544 family is a natural extension of our switching portfolio, and as such, allows us to reach further into the customer’s network with an all-ADTRAN switching solution, supporting a wider range of applications and customer infrastructure requirements,” Saunders said.

A few of ADTRAN’s different products are succinctly described in an earlier TMCnet report.
