AT&T to Allow iPhone Mobile VoIP
By Gary Kim, Contributing Editor
AT&T (
News -
Alert) says it has changed its mind about VoIP applications running on Apple iPhones. AT&T now will allow Apple to enable VoIP applications for use on AT&T’s wireless network, not just Wi-Fi networks, as previously was the policy.
Skeptics will argue AT&T's move is merely an effort to head off more-stringent regulation, but AT&T has been looking at its policies regarding VoIP since about the summer of 2008.
Nor should there be much surprise that carriers are moving in the direction of more-open networks as their customers complain and the threat of regulation remains serious. Over time, virtually all observers would agree that mobile VoIP is inevitable. The only question has been the timing of such moves.
