Social Media: Teens, Geeks and Your Business

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

If you can, place these alphabetically-presented social media outlets: Digg, Facebook, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Twitter and YouTube (News - Alert), in order of where they rank in the following demographic statistics:

1. 200 million users.
2. 123 million views per day.
3. Over 50 million users.
4. 18 million users.
5. 8 million members.
6. 6 million visitors a month.

If you're tired of hearing about 'social media' this and that, articles praising 'social media' as the greatest 'disruptive force' in business since, oh, the invention of the corner store, we say... better learn to love it.

Inc. 500 recently found that 91 percent of companies use at least one social media tool, compared with 77 percent of companies surveyed in 2008. Marketing Charts reports that a hefty 86 percent of companies surveyed plan to spend more money on social media in 2010, while a further 13 percent are planning to keep 'the same level' of budget.

One wonders who's in that remaining one percent, and who'll be using their office space this time next year.

Companies you might not imagine are also making good use of social media, it isn't just Apple (News - Alert) and funky downtown ad agencies. Take a company like FreedomVOICEa company’s image, connectivity and efficiency. Think you'd ever see them on YouTube or Facebook?

, a provider of toll free numbers and toll free number services, business communications tools and features to enhance
Uh, yes. As well as Twitter and LinkedIn.

'We have over 1,700 followers on Twitter, and we're on 17 Twitter lists of good people to follow,' FreedomVOICE (News - Alert) officials say. They add that they see their Twitter account as 'an outlet to get our message out to the public,' adding that it has helped them 'stay in the public eye and get in touch with editors for editorial coverage.'

They make savvy use of LinkedIn as well, posting articles to over 20 LinkedIn groups with 8,000 to over 100,000 members. Company officials report 'hundreds' of visitors from LinkedIn each month.

FreedomVOICE has at least half a dozen videos on YouTube where they collect thousands of views -  and their Facebook (News - Alert) presence gives them traffic and a ‘profile’ in the industry.

One of the better uses of social media, though, as far as this reporter's concerned, is blogging. It lets the company present a much more personalized, casual and interactive voice.

Again, FreedomVOICE's blogSocial media - it's not just for teens or geeks anymore.

is a good example of a company you might not associate with blogging doing a good job with one - or 'over 70' of them on various telecom topics.

Answer: 1. Facebook, 2. YouTube, 3. LinkedIn, 4. Twitter, 5. StumbleUpon, 6. Digg.
