TI Introduces New TMS320C665x KeyStone Multicore DSPs for Gateway Developers

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Texas Instruments (News - Alert) Incorporated (TI) recently announced the introduction of its KeyStone-based TMS320C665x multicore digital signal processors (DSPs). Designed for use in enterprise gateway applications such as session border controllers and IP PBX (News - Alert) gateways, the latest offering from TI will serve as a highly dense and scalable solution capable of delivering high degree of system level power and cost efficiency for developers.

Developers can leverage TI's KeyStone-based TMS320C665x multicore digital signal processors (DSPs), to address specific gateway challenges that include matching voice coding techniques, processing of tone and signalling messaging, as well as differentiating facsimile from voice, transforming traditionally used circuit switched connections to IP, and ensuring better management and reporting of voice quality.

In a release, Ramesh Kumar, business manager, multicore processors, TI, said that, "Our newest multicore DSPs give gateway developers an all-encompassing solution that meets all of their specialized processing requirements. The C665x DSPs deliver the highest levels of performance at targeted channel density while maximizing power consumption. With our new KeyStone devices, we are addressing the specific requirements of enterprise gateway designs and providing developers what's required to be successful and a differentiator in this competitive market."

TI developed its highly scalable C665x DSPs to provide voice processing, signalling and system control support. When there is an increase in SIP messaging, the cost-efficient DSPs can help in further enhancing today's solutions. TI's C665x multicore processors offer a high degree of scalability and unprecedented channel density which makes them an ideal fit within the enterprise environment. The TMS320C6654 DSP functioning at 850MHz offers 64 channels, G.729AB support. The TMS320C6655 DSP at 1GHz can provide support for 128 channels of G.729AB while the TMS320C6657 DSP at 1.25GHz offers support for applications that need increased density.

Retailing at prices just below $30 at 10 KU, the C665x processors from TI come with three affordable and fully pin-compatible, power-optimized solutions that support migrating from single core to multicore. The C6657 include two 1.25-GHz DSP cores and have been designed to support 80 GMACs and 40 GFLOPs. The C6655 and C6654 single core solutions support 40 GMACs and 20 GFLOPs and 27.2 GMACs and 13.6 GFLOPs.
