Broadcom Corporation (News - Alert) recently announced that its GPON product portfolio, featuring complete residential gateway software, is now available for Broadlight (News - Alert) GPON system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions. The company's GPON portfolio, designed to feature field-proven, carrier-grade residential gateway software, has been developed to allow effective and faster GPON penetration by manufacturers into telecommunications markets.
In a statement, Greg Fischer, Broadcom's vice president and general manager of Broadband Carrier Access (News - Alert), said that "by leveraging Broadcom's field proven multi-platform software now available on the BCM685xx product family, system vendors and carriers can quickly and cost-effectively develop and deploy next generation fiber networks with consistency to their DSL software roadmaps. This supports the continuing growth in new, revenue-generating class of services such as IPTV (News - Alert), gaming, home automation, and whole-home connectivity."
The BCM685xx series, which further enhances Broadcom's GPON solutions offering, has been designed to deliver high-speed connectivity while robustly addressing Quality of Service (QoS) standards for residential triple-play services, which include video-on-demand (VoD), HD-IPTV, voice over IP (VoIP) and high-speed Internet (HIS).
Broadcom, which supports complete software integration across all carrier access CPE platforms, has provided carriers and system vendors with a turnkey system capable of supporting faster and advanced end-to-end FTTx networks.
"Broadcom's leading position in GPON addresses the consumer demand for a high-quality triple-play experience and the ability to add new features like cloud services and interactive gaming,” said Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, Broadband Access, and Video, Infonetics (News - Alert) Research. “With fiber networks projected for solid growth, GPON ONT gateways are expected to grow from 7.3 million units worldwide to nearly 18 million by 2016."
The company demonstrated its residential gateway platform at the BBWF Conference organized in Amsterdam October 16-18. The BCM685xx series of GPON system-on-chips (SoCs) are now available for sampling.
Broadcom specializes in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communication.
