Current Analysis Reports on Evolution of Carrier mVoIP Plays

By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor

Current Analysis (News - Alert), reportedly the only provider of real-time, in-depth tactical competitive intelligence, analysis and advice, recently released a report on the evolution of carrier mVoIP plays.

mVoIP, otherwise known as mobile Internet phone services, converts voice into data and sends it over a mobile network. Unlike global mVoIP services like Skype (News - Alert), carrier mVoIP apps target a variety markets and tend to demonstrate a more varied and segmented positioning.

"Some carriers have even resorted to launching smartphone apps for voice calls which are, in fact, standard circuit-switched mobile voice," observed Weston Henderek, principal analyst, consumer services U.S. at Current Analysis.

The report indicated that until recently, mobile carriers viewed mVoIP apps and services as a threat for they felt that mVoIP is likely to overtax the network and also take away a share of their profits.

Although this view hasn't changed much, many European and U.S. carriers have reportedly decided to tackle the issue in a different way. They came up with their own branded apps for IP voice and messaging.

Carrier mVoIP deployments now range from national prepaid acquisition aggression, to targeting segments with frequent roaming and international calling requirements.

According to analysts at Current Analysis, they have been developed to foster value and differentiation across a more granular spectrum of services.

According to Emma Mohr-McClune, service director, consumer services- Global at Current Analysis, the current advisory report gives an overview of the variety of approaches in evidence from across a number of markets and provides a perspective on the variety of apps launched by diverse players.

For more than 15 years, sales teams, product managers, marketing professionals and executives have relied on Current Analysis to cash in on market opportunities and gear themselves up to combat competition.

In related VoIP news, Patton (News - Alert) Electronics recently unveiled its revolutionary ‘futurized’ new generation line of IPv6-ready SmartNode SIP-trunking Media Gateways, which will help enterprises, SMBs and carrier-providers seamlessly transition to the next-generation of Internet connection, IPv6. This new series of VoIP media gateways will offer users unmatched scalability and survivability, as well as protect against obsolescence when IPv6 goes global. Boasting richer, more valuable features at a significantly lower cost, Patton’s new generation of SIP-trunking media gateways will prove very advantageous.
