The global positioning system, or GPS, is one of the better inventions of modern man. While the concept is simple, it requires a massive amount of technology in order to make it work. Currently, the GPS system has 31 active satellites in orbit with atomic clocks making two orbits per day around Earth. This is taking place at the same time as hundreds of millions of people are requesting location data every single second of every day. As with most successive computing and electronic products, they get smaller and faster. In the case of GPS receivers, they are now part of smartphones and watches. Magellan, a leading global market portable navigation device manufacturer, is moving into the software side of GPS by introducing the Magellan SmartGPS apps for Android (News - Alert) and iOS mobile devices.

The application is part of Magellan’s Smart Ecosystem, a cloud platform with social media and navigation integration directly onto a map. SmartGPS offers a personalized experience whether you are driving or walking by providing reviews and tips for local businesses and points of interest with social media sites such as Yelp, Foursquare (News - Alert) and others in real time.

The cloud architecture of the application gives developers tools for monetization of end-users mobile search and navigation. The app can be part of an added value for a service.

When you choose a destination, the app displays location relevant-information in squares that flip over to show tips and reviews from nearby stores, restaurants or places of interest. If the user decides to go to one of these destinations he or she can go to the location without having to open another application or device directly from the SmartGPS.

"We architected the Smart Ecosystem to integrate with automotive infotainment and mobile network service platforms so users can enjoy a truly mobile, connected car experience now," said Peggy Fong, president of MiTAC Digital Corporation, parent company of Magellan.

Once the application is installed, the mobile device can be paired up with navigation systems that are enabled with SmartGPS. Selected locations can be saved in Magellan’s Smart Ecosystem cloud and can be synced and shared to any device enabled with SmartGPS through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

The application will be available as a free version or a premium version with spoken turn-by-turn directions form Google (News - Alert) Play and iTunes. It will be in the North American market later this spring and in the summer in Europe.
