Samsung Smart Glasses in the Works? Of Course, But for Now it is All Just Guesswork

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and several other websites (e.g. The Verge) have latched on to several supposed Samsung (News - Alert) patent diagrams from a patent application that supposedly shows off a design of sorts for a Samsung effort at developing a pair of smart glasses. The diagrams apparently found its way to the United States by way of the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Services website.

The patent was supposedly early this year and was supposedly granted full registered status this month. We certainly won't argue that it was, but we ourselves were not able to track it down at the website. The image shown below is provided courtesy of the Wall Street Journal (though as we noted it also appears elsewhere as well) - we did not download it from the South Korean website. Or were we able to find a direct link to the patent application from another website - links only took us to the home page of the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Services website. After a number of attempts to search for the patent we gave up - perhaps prematurely we confess, but…

In any case, the Wall Street Journal claims the patent was granted in October and we'll go with that. Shown below is one of a number of diagrams that are floating about (The Verge has other similar and related images available that we have not reproduced here).

WSJ also notes that according to a memo attached to several drawings of the device, “This design is of a type [of glasses] with earphones integrated, allowing [users] to take phone calls and listen to music during workouts. The device is linked to a smartphone and displays alerts for information running on the phone, providing easy access to control when a user's hands are tied with sports activities. The device features a lens that is either transparent or translucent.”

Well, that certainly doesn't say much about anything beyond the enormously obvious. Further, what can we really take away from the diagram that is shown? We can say one thing perhaps with some degree of confidence - it looks to have, as the close up below highlights, a USB port attached to it as part of its design.

What can we really say at this point? Alas there isn't much to say at all. There are already numerous vendors out with shipping products that either can or do already compete with Google (News - Alert) Glass - Vuzix, for example, or Recon Instruments, among many others. Will these Samsung glasses lend themselves to further development as part of yet another Galaxy extension, or focus on other avenues of business, such as the enterprise space, or will they perhaps target Samsung Smart TV users? Or all of the above? We know not the answers to any of these questions. Yet. All we have are some diagrams.

We encourage you to visit the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Services website and scope it out. If are able to track down the patent itself do let us know!
