Plantronics has introduced new applications that could change the way workers use Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync, particularly those on the go. Being that the company is a pioneer in wearable technology and audio communications, it’s no surprise that its latest breakthroughs leverage its sensor-enabled wearable devices as well.
For starters, Plantronics (News - Alert) is demonstrating this week at LyncConf 2014 how a connected worker can use their headset to seamlessly transfer an active Lync call from a computer to a mobile phone as they move away from their desk. Meanwhile, the company’s new Smart Presence app can provide more accurate presence information in Microsoft Lync, whether the user is on a mobile or desk phone, to further enhance this experience.
“Plantronics provides Lync customers with the flexibility to work anywhere by enabling them to move between devices and places throughout the day to maximize the benefits of the Microsoft Lync experience,” said Bill Loewenthal, vice president of Enterprise Solutions at Plantronics, in a statement. “The ability of our audio devices to easily transition communications in multiple environments and deliver information about the user’s world makes communicating easier because it anticipates a user’s needs and provides more accurate information to those around them.”
Plantronics and its partners have long worked to enhance the overall Lync experience, but the company’s new mobile-centric capabilities are a significant breakthrough given the growing prevalence of BYOD and mobile workers. Its new seamless transfer feature leverages the Voyager Legend UC headset to seamlessly transfer calls from a PC to a mobile phone. This is triggered by proximity information collected by the headset, which then prompts Microsoft Lync to transfer the call to the user’s mobile device.
This feature will be included in the Plantronics application and will be available in the Microsoft Lync catalog later this year.
As for Smart Presence, the app provides enhanced presence capabilities when used with Plantronics Spokes for Windows and supported audio devices. The app can change a user’s Lync presence status to “In a call” when they are on a mobile phone call, or when they are using a traditional PBX (News - Alert) desk phone or third-party softphone.
