Energy Telecom announced that the U.S. Patent Office has granted the company a patent for its smart eyewear, or what the company calls its “Zone of Connectivity, Awareness and Safety Utility.”

"In a world where users demand continuous connectivity at work or play, indoors and outside, the ability to manage and communicate situational, environmental, and biometric information is becoming imperative,” said Energy Telecom president Tom Rickards.

This is actually the third family of patents that Energy Telecom has received for its product. The first was for the eyewear itself and the second was for the wireless earpieces and audio controls.

The third patent family covers the company’s smart eyewear establishing a “Zone of Connectivity, Awareness and Safety” around the user. The eyewear has a number of sensors for biometrics, position, spatial orientation and motion. The user can then determine if a hazardous situation exists, delivering the information to other people wirelessly.

The company targets its professional eyewear to first responders such as police, firefighters and security personnel as well as people in dangerous jobs such as mining, logging and construction.

Rickards sees a large potential market thanks to the new patent.

“We believe this first of our third family of patents, describing a Zone of Connectivity, Awareness and Safety for the wearer, is a core requirement for eyewear in the emerging wearable technology market, as well as in applications where users of any eyewear, including sunglasses, prescription glasses, goggles, and face shields require continuous communication with the world of information and contact around them," he said.

Energy Telecom also has a recreational model for athletic use that can stream audio from mobile devices over Bluetooth.

Despite the optimism, the company’s quarterly earnings release in May showed a profit of exactly nil, though Energy Telecom expects increased sales and expansion in Europe and Australia. The new patent could bolster the company’s reputation in the growing wearable technology market.
