Just about a month ago, I wrote that Samsung (News - Alert) had announced the curved Gear S smartwatch would ship in sometime in October. There are two things that set this device apart from most smartwatches, first it will have a two inch curved AMOLED display, but possibly more important is the fact that it has support for 2G and 3G wireless networks, along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth hardware for optional data connectivity.
True to its word and according to Android (News - Alert) Central, Samsung announced that its Tizen-based Gear S will go on sale later this fall. Considering that we are at the end of September, it is a good bet that the smartwatch will make its debut sometime next month. The two sentence concise press release from Samsung reads as follows, “The Gear S will come to the U.S. this fall and will be available through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile (News - Alert) and Verizon Wireless. More information to come soon!”
T-Mobile sent out emails to several sites including Android Central and TechnoBuffalo confirming Samsung’s press release and stating that the Gear S will be available from them through their Equipment Installment Plan (EIP), which means that you don’t have to pay the entire cost at time of purchase. More information from T-Mobile, including pricing will be available sometime next month.
AT&T (News - Alert) had a posting on its website stating that it will offer in-store demos in the near future and that with would have previews of the smartwatch soon. Of course, this does bring up the question of pricing. To date, Samsung has not made any announcements concerning a pricing structure for the Gear S other than the fact that in Australia the device sells for about $400. Hopefully, when it reaches U.S. shores the price will be a little more reasonable. Regardless, a safe bet would be that all four carriers would have a very similar pricing structure.
Considering the number of smartwatches that are going to be out on the market in time for the holiday shopping season, it will be interesting to see how the Samsung Gear S fares. I suppose that the bottom line for each of these new devices will be determined by how each of the carriers promotes them.
