BlackBerry (News - Alert), one of the global leaders in mobile communication, has announced at CES 2015 it is diving into the world of wearable tech.

BBM, the popular messenger app on BlackBerry, has moved its services to a variety of Android Wear smartwatches. BBM is available on most smart devices including, iPhone (News - Alert), Android, Windows Phone and of course, BlackBerry. It is estimated that smartphone users spend about nine hours a week on BBM. Moving the app to wearable tech will allow users to utilize the messaging features on the go and communicate at a faster pace.

The research firm Canalys, has predicted that smart watch shipments will continue to see growth into 2015, estimating that more that 28 million units will be shipped this year alone. BBM hopes to make their software relevant by jumping on the wearable tech bandwagon. With the new software BBM users will have the ability to access messages directly on their smartwatch, reliving them from the burden of constantly carrying about ones smartphone.

There will be a lot of new capabilities on BBM for Android (News - Alert) that will provide users a more fluent messaging experience. Users will be able to receive alerts on their phone- when messages come in, users will be able to see who sent the message and preview it. If users want to dismiss a message, or notification, they can with a simple swipe. BBM users will also have the ability to create brief messages to send in response.

“BlackBerry is committed to listening to our customers and integrating new features and partners to improve the BBM Chat experience,” said Herman Li, Senior Vice President, BBM Engineering and Product Management, BlackBerry, in a press release. “The integration of BBM to support wearable technology is just one way we’re expanding the capabilities of our portfolio and delivering exciting options for customers to easily access BlackBerry’s cross-platform technologies.”
