The Eye Tribe is a Danish startup company, which produces eye tracking technology. The company mainly sells the technology to software developers so the eye tracking device can be incorporated into their applications and programs. The Eye Tribe’s software allows a user to direct a smart phone, tablet, or computer with just the look of an eye.

Eye tracking is the process of measuring either where one is looking, which is called the point of gaze, or the motion of an eye relative to the head. An eye tracker is a device for measuring eye positions and eye movement. Eye trackers are used in research on the visual system, as a tool in marketing, as an input device for human computer interaction and in product design. There are a number of methods for measuring eye movement, with the most popular using video images from which the eye position is extracted.

The Eye Tribe initially displayed its eye tracking software for Android (News - Alert) as a teaser during last year’s Mobile World Congress event. For the past year it was running in beta mode with a few select clients. The Android version was officially launched at the beginning of this year at CES (News - Alert) 2015. At this year’s Mobile World Congress, which is winding down today, The Eye Tribe demonstrated its Eye Tracking SDK for Android.

The Eye Tribe’s software solution is really designed for integration and is based on industry standards such as MIPI, I2C and USB. The Eye Tribe eye tracking software is now able to offer support for Android, Windows and OS/X. Due to the fact that The Eye Tribe software relies only on standard affordable components that are easily integrated into next generation devices, the company is able to help OEMs fast track their strategies with the ability to move new products to mass market consumers featuring robust eye tracking functions at an affordable price.

At the beginning of the year, The Eye Tribe earned a CES Best of Innovation Award for its Eye Tribe Tracker. It is with this in mind that The Eye Tribe’s CEO, Sune Alstrup made the following comments, “We are honored to have received such prominent recognition by the industry and media for our innovations in affordable, integrated eye tracking solutions for mobile and mass market consumer products. We look forward to being at Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) this week to show OEMs how we can help them quickly and inexpensively build break-through mobile products using our award-winning eye tracking technology.”

The fact that this innovative technology will give developers the ability to design programs, which will allow users to control their devices through a simple look could have a greater impact than just getting more work done. Since a person would have the ability to scroll, navigate and even make selections on their smartphones and tablets through eye movement, the implications are that a person who does not have use of their the arms or hands could still use these devices and be able to accomplish a lot.
