Vidyo (News - Alert), Inc., a provider of visual communication and collaboration solutions, recently announced a plan to bring its popular cloud-based video conferencing platform VidyoWorks to smart eyewear devices. As Google (News - Alert) Glass and similar offerings continue to gain momentum and the technology’s full potential for both consumer products and enterprise operations is gradually realized, companies like Vidyo are branching out into the smart eyewear sector to offer their own innovative solutions.

The VidyoWorks software platform lets multipoint video and audio communication as well as content sharing functionality be embedded into any application, service or device. This technology can be used in coordination with client and server application programming interfaces (APIs) to build customized communication solutions. A scalable video coding (SVC) platform is used to deliver VidyoWorks on wearable visual devices.

“VidyoWorks opens up a whole new market for developers to create applications for hands free see-what-I-see applications on smart glasses across industries including healthcare, field service, retail, energy, and government,” said Eran Westman, CEO of Vidyo. “There is a tremendous market opportunity for these applications with augmented reality and VidyoWorks delivers reliability and scale over wireless networks, making it a market leading solution for mobile applications.”

Vuzix, a smart glasses manufacturer, will offer its enterprise-grade Vuzix M100 smart glasses as the first product of its type to feature the VidyoWorks platform. Users can connect to video conferences with users on any other type of device with ease, and Vidyo’s dynamic adaption technology ensures each session is reliable, secure and efficiently managed. One of the most beneficial features of the solution is the capability of remote viewing, which allows workers to share what they see with someone more experienced regardless of physical location. Companies employing this solution can therefore manage resources much more efficiently and streamline workflows while reducing operating costs and ensuring top-notch customer service.

“The high quality viewing experience Vidyo enables builds upon our commitment to provide the best possible mobile experience,” said Paul Travers, President and CEO of Vuzix. “What sets VidyoWorks on smart glasses apart is not only the stunning visual quality Vidyo’s infrastructure can deliver, but the combination of quality, affordability and ease of use that make Vidyo the ideal platform for enterprises large and small.”

Video conferencing and collaboration is rapidly changing as hardware-based systems are replaced by modern software and cloud-based solutions. Vidyo’s platform is entering a space with many competitors— Cisco Systems, Polycom (News - Alert), Avaya, LifeSize Communications and various startups—but is somewhat differentiated by its strong approach to smart glasses and other wearable tech. As the technology continues to be integrated into society, and as businesses find more uses for it, smart glasses will have a lasting impact on the face of video communication tools and open doors for even better collaboration capabilities in the future.
