Citing a recent story on CNBC about concerns some security professionals have about the forthcoming Apple (News - Alert) Watch, John Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the nation's leading recycler of electronic waste, has issued a public statement reminding consumers to consider the importance of keeping their digital data private.

In the CNBC piece, experts warn that as wearable devices go more mainstream, they will likely be targeted by hackers. Even though the Apple Watch won't be available until next month, security researchers are described in the story as already trying to figure out what vulnerabilities might exist.

"That security professionals are already on red alert before the Apple Watch has even made its way to consumers illustrates just how serious a problem cybercrime has become," said Shegerian. "Be it an Apple Watch, smartphone, laptop or some piece of hardware previously owned by a government agency, technology toay is far too vulnerable to the attacks of hackers and cyber thieves."

"With the many wonderful advancements in technology, there is very fast turnover when it comes to electronic devices," Shegerian added. "There's no reason for us not to enjoy and benefit from these innovations, but the key is for everyone to remember to properly recycle all old and unwanted items at the end of their lifecycles. This final step in the life of a consumer electronic device is crucial for the sake of each of our digital security and our environment. Recycling the right way - with a certified recycling company you can trust is more important than ever."

Shegerian added that ERI currently provides the only nationwide solution offering 100% guaranteed data destruction for consumer electronics devices and e-waste.
