We have seen that the concept of bring your own device (BYOD) to work has created the need for companies to develop policies for their use. Augmented reality devices, smartwatches and a variety of other wearable devices have given us a new acronym, BYOW, which stands for bring your own wearable. “New” may not be the correct word, as it seems that a report from SalesForce shows that over a majority of companies already has a BYOW policy.

It seems that a lot of companies were waiting for Apple’s smartwatch before developing apps for the wearable devices. Microsoft (News - Alert) has been working on an update for its OneDrive cloud storage app for Apple (News - Alert) Watch. The first app that most developers work on for smartwatches is fitness trackers. It seems to be one of the major reasons for having a device on your wrist. Microsoft’s app is different, but will it be used?

Augmented reality has been around for quite a while, however, it now at a stage where a wearable headset can be used for more than just gaming. It is with this in mind that Facebook (News - Alert) has purchased Oculus Rift. Is Zuckerberg trying to create an environment where Facebook users can communicate with each other in a virtual world? Since no actual details have been revealed at this time, we will just have to wait and see.

Android Wear is a version of Google's Android (News - Alert) operating system designed for smartwatches and other wearables. Android Wear integrates Google Now technology and mobile notifications into a smartwatch. A major drawback has been the fact that it was possibly a little too complicated to maneuver through the menu options. This may no longer be a concern as Google (News - Alert) has made some improvements.

One of the things that makes Android Wear smartwatches stand out from most of the other products on the market is the fact that it does not need to be tied, or paired with a smartphone in order to function. Android Wear devices are also available through various manufacturers. Obviously this is a different approach from the Apple Watch. Are we looking at another platform war?
