About.me, a site that allows professionals to create personal websites, has announced the creation of Intro, an Apple (News - Alert) Watch app that serves as a virtual business card.

“Building Intro for Apple Watch was a no brainer. The Apple Watch is about quickness and convenience and so is Intro. No more fumbling through your wallet, looking for a business card or even the need to pull out your phone. With a few taps on the Apple Watch, you can quickly share your digital business card with anyone you meet,” about.me product manager Jordan Dodds said

Users can share information from their about.me pages, including phone numbers, biographies and email addresses. They can send the information to other people’s devices by speaking the appropriate phone number into the watch. The app will then send an SMS message.

An about.me page typically consists of a short bio and a link to a person’s portfolio, as well as social media links.

The new app should complement about.me’s existing functions. The site caters to professionals such as graphic artists and photographers with visually striking layouts. Given that Apple products are already popular in the design community, it isn’t much of a stretch to move into Apple Watch apps. The app features a minimalistic, elegant design that fits into the design of Apple’s ecosystem.

Intro bridges the gap between in-person and online social networking. While the site supports online “business cards” already, it’s always been rather cumbersome to show it to people before mobile devices became popular.

The device also shows off a practical use for the Apple Watch and other wearable technology. The app is obviously useful for job hunting, whether for a full-time job or a freelance gig. Given that many of the site’s users are creative people, it might be the latter. Even though it’s entirely possible to secure freelance gigs completely online, sometimes it’s best to have a face-to-face meeting, in which case tools like Intro come in handy.
