The most popular form of wearable devices is the fitness band. Smartwatches are gaining popularity because we have a lot more companies manufacturing them. I did not know this until last week, but Best Buy (News - Alert) has a rather large smartwatch section. Whether we are talking about wrist devices or augmented reality headsets, we think about these devices being purchased by the general public. Is this the market that will sustain wearable technology?
Smartwatches have been out for a several years now, but it seems that it took Apple (News - Alert) to get the market moving ahead. Devices are only as good as their functionality and it seems that the Apple Watch has brought more developers into the game of creating apps designed for the smartwatch. One such company is Dropcam, which developed a new Apple Watch app.
In conjunction with Qualcomm (News - Alert), Google is working on a method of using the camera, gyroscope and accelerometer in their smartphones that use Snapdragon 810 processor allowing developers to track a device’s 3D motion, as well as mapping the surrounding environment. Google (News - Alert) is calling this Project Tango.
I have seen several articles lately concerning the creation of supercomputers and I have written a few. While we like to have as little as possible cluttering our devices, the need for processing power will always be a constant. The problem is that when it comes to wearable devices they need to be as small, yet as functional as possible. Fujitsu is working on a virtualization engine that runs on both a smart device and a server.
I mentioned the Apple Watch above and how it has made certain things more popular. Along with the latest iPhone (News - Alert) and smartwatch, Apple Pay was introduced. This is a mobile payment and digital wallet service by Apple that allows you to make payments using your mobile devices. It seems that in addition to fitness bands, wearable technology is gaining popularity in the U.K. due to the fact that consumers can make faster payments.
