For those in the know about wearable technology, BeBop Sensors is a company with a line of sensors geared toward making fabric smarter. These sensors apparently work quite well, too, as the company recently landed an award from Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert), the 2015 Frost & Sullivan North American Technology Innovation Award.
This is the basis for a variety of technologies, ranging from tools for automobiles, tools for sports, healthcare and beyond. Since its launch in 2014's fourth quarter, BeBop has brought out 14 new sensors for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to put to use. Since BeBop uses a particular technology that brings together all the sensors and relevant electronics into one package, that makes BeBop's line particularly desirable for use.
BeBop sensors can detect and distinguish pressure, and can also ascertain factors such as XY location, rotational speed, motion in general, the angle at which said sensors are operating, and more. With such capabilities in place, a variety of possible uses opens up. One example is the “smart tire”, which allows BeBop sensors to relay key information about a tire's performance and the road surface. The sensors can tell a tire's tread depth, indicating when a change of tire is due—imagine a gas gauge for tires—as well as relaying key information back to the car itself, to change brake responses, modify suspension, or other such valuable, and potentially life-saving, tools.
The sheer variety of use cases, among other things, led to Frost & Sullivan's award, commonly given to companies that are set to launch major growth in a particular industry, almost as a way to reward companies who have spotted a new standard before it actually is a standard. Frost & Sullivan's senior research analyst Sumit Kumar Pal offered up some comment around BeBop's win, saying “OEMs find it challenging to develop or procure smart fabric sensors that are multi-functional, reliable, and low-priced. Luckily for them, BeBop Sensors' innovative smart fabric sensor technology meets these requirements, and because of its strong overall performance, BeBop Sensors is recognized with Frost & Sullivan’s 2015 Technology Innovation Award in Smart Fabric Sensors.”
But there are other ways to spot a standard before it can become a standard. One great way is by attending the Wearable Tech Expo, set to arrive at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City and run from July 13 – 15. While there, attendees will have the opportunity to see a host of exhibitions and hear from some major names in the field of wearables. For instance, those on hand on Monday, July 13 at 2:55 pm can catch Readyaction LLC's David Rost, who will be delivering a session titled “Extreme Wearables: How Wearables are Enhancing the Extreme Sports Experience.” Naturally, systems like BeBop Sensors' would fit nicely into such an endeavor, as the extreme outdoor sports market can benefit from sensors designed to track pressure, temperature, and a host of other functions from packages small enough to fit into clothing.
We're all looking forward to seeing what wearable tech can do in the months and years to come, but it's already shown its true colors as a powerful tool to accomplish a variety of tasks. There's plenty more development afoot, though, and with tools like BeBop Sensors' lineup, we're getting a better look than ever.
