Wearable Tech World Week in Review: Compass Intelligence, uSens, Smartwatches, Sensoria

In many ways, wearable technology is completely redefining how we view the concept of “technology.” For example, a shirt is technically a form of technology—granted a very ancient and simple one—but nobody refers to clothing as technology anymore, and yet, once upon a time, the T-shirt was cutting edge.

Well, it seems we’ve gone full circle. Now we have “smart” T-shirts. This represents one of several big announcements in the wearable tech space this week. Let’s review.

The week kicked off with David Delony’s assessment of a recent study by Compass Intelligence (News - Alert) regarding our use of wearable technology in the enterprise. It comes as no surprise that the use cases for wearable technology in the workplace are boundless; however, it’s important to look at the “why” and the “how” of the matter, which is exactly what we did, HERE.

Next up, uSens, a VR startup, made headlines with news that it may have just made a big breakthrough for VR technology. The company has announced two new features for their Impression Pi VR: 3D gesture recognition and something called “Super Reality.” Find out how these new features can dramatically increase the viability of VR in our full coverage, HERE.

Back to the books, another new study this week has shown a drop in traditional watch sales for the month of June. According to NPD Group (News - Alert)—a jewelry industry research firm—sales of traditional watches in June totaled $375 million in the U.S., an 11 percent drop from June 2014 sales totals. So the question becomes, do smartwatches have something to do with this? Reporter Christopher Mohr thinks “yes.”

Last but not least, we’ve come full circle—both in the context of this article and in how we view the T-shirt. Sensoria (News - Alert), a company that develops smart socks, has released a smart T-shirt and sports bra made from moisture-wicking fabric  that have built-in electrodes to measure heart rate. It’s quite possible that in the future there will be no need for the term “wearable technology”: all shirts will be as “smart” as Sensoria’s. And, in light of this announcement that future seems to be getting closer with each passing day. Get all the specs of the new smart clothes in reporter Steve Anderson’s full story.

On that note, if you happen to be in Las Vegas early next week and are interested in hearing more about wearables, be sure to check out the Wearable Tech Expo happening August 18 – 20 at Creasers Palace. We’ll be there, bringing you all the most important updates.
